Writing well is now a minimum skill for any colleges or profession. Similar to other areas of academic, good writing habits must be cultivated from kindergarden; each step must lay an unshakable foundation for the next. NorthStar Tutoring Services writing program is designed so that by the time a teen reaches the 8th grade, he/she should be considered an "advanced writer." The best way to achieve this is by focusing on what's useful and discard what's not when teaching a child how to write.

What are some of the most important elements in tutoring a beginner writer?

Setting a good example for student is one of the essential steps in successfully helping a student learn how to write effectively. There are always exception to the rules, however, majority of students need to see and be aware that writing doesn't come naturally to everyone; ideas do not jump from a writer's mind and become an article/book/paper. Writing is a process of brainstorming, making drafts, revision, and editing. The earlier students realize that writing is a step-by-step process, the easier it will be for them to master writing.

What are some great ways to encourage my child to write at home?

We found that like all other subjects in school, if you can make it fun, your child will enjoy doing it. Below are some great ways to encourage writing:

  • Play a game! Keeping score and summarizing the events of any game is a great way to get a child interested in writing.
  • Did your family visit some place fun this weekend or went on a trip? Ask your child what was fun about the event, and if they would like to visit the place again (if so, when) in writing.
  • Writing about a TV show your child just watched is also a great way to promote writing since your child is already interested in the topic.
  • These are just some of the ways to promote writing. Remember, above all else, if you can get your child to write, then the first and most difficult step has been accomplished.

What are some of NorthStar Tutoring Services writing program unique features?

At any age or stage, making sure that your child is writing at an appropriate level according to his abilities is extremely important. We work with the individuals to ensure that they maximized their own abilities. Every child, whether he is a beginner or an advanced writer, can improve and become better. The first and most important step is to evaluate your child's abilities and determine where he may be on our "writing stages." Once this is completed, we implement the below (among others) features to ensure progress:

  • Custom learning plans for your child based on his needs. The focus is to strengthen writing basic foundation, promote advanced writing techniques, and/or eliminate poor writing habits, as appropriate through daily exercises and repetition.
  • Similarly to our math and reading program, we collaborate with your child's teacher and keep you informed about your child's progress. Continued interaction between tutors, teachers, and parents is the key to delivering positive results.
  • Provide monthly "writing stages" barometer.
  • Do you offer any enrichment program for writing?

Yes. We provide enrichment programs for children who are ahead of their peers in all areas of academic. Our goal is to always maximize an individual's talents and gifts.
